New York, NY Jackson Brothers Diamonds 1908 Letterhead Leys Jewelers Butte, MT
This piece is related to the “Leys Jewelry Company” of Butte. After working for a year as a journeyman jeweler in Scotland, Alexander S. Christie arrived in Marion, Kansas, in 1881 where he worked his trade for several years before forming a partnership with his brother-in-law, James D. Leys where they opened Leys Jewelry in Butte in 1888. In 1891 Christie disposed of his Kansas location and moved to Butte to devote his full attention to business there. In 1897, they added a wholesale component to their business with Leys heading to New York City to open the firm’s headquarters at 65 Nassau Street, leaving Christie in full charge of the Butte location. Christie had local interests in the Silver Bow National Bank, the Haskins Drug Company and was a member of several area lodges, including the Knights Templars, the Shriners and Silver Bow Lodge No. 48 of the Masonic Order. Over the years, the company went through different names, including: “Leys, Christie & Co.”, “Leys Jeweler and Optometrist” and “Leys Jewelers and Silversmiths” and moved location three times over the course of the business’s run. Three generations ran the store until it closed at its final location at 20 N. Main Street in 1965.
On watermarked laid paper. Showing signs of wear and handling consistent with its age. Expected fold creases from posting. Small wavy creases along the top edge. Fold-overs in 2 corners. Eye-catching header type faces / fonts. Overall, in good condition. Will display well in your collection. You will receive the exact sheet as shown in the photos. It measures approx. 7" x 7 7/8"
