William Darius Bishop (1827 - 1907) son of Alfred Bishop (1798-1849) one of the builders of the New York and New Haven Railroad. William graduated Yale in 1849, was a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives from Connecticut's 4th district from 1857 to 1859. He also was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1872, and in the Connecticut Senate from 1866 to 1874, and from 1877 to 1878. He was the president of the Naugatuck Railroad Company from approx. 1883- 1893 as well as the Vice President and President of the New York and New Haven Railroad Company. He was a founder of the Eastern Railroad Association and its president until the time of his death.

The Naugatuck Railroad has a long history in Connecticut, with the original railroad chartered in 1845 and opening in 1849. The railroad ran from Bridgeport to Winsted, following the Naugatuck River. It changed ownership several times due to economic changes, and in 1887 the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad leased the line. By 1906, the railroad was fully owned by the New Haven and Hartford Railroad.
