Naugatuck Railroad Co. Bridgeport Connecticut 1849 Check #109 E.F Bishop Signed

Ethan Ferris Bishop (1825 - 1883) son of the late Alfred Bishop (1798-1849) one of the builders of the New York and New Haven Railroad, and a brother to the Hon. William D. Bishop, formerly President of the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad Company. After his father's death Mr. Bishop completed many contracts then under way, and became largely interested in railroad building in Connecticut and the West. Among the many positions he held, Ethan was president of Bridgeport Steamboat Company in and around 1865. At the time of his death in 1883, he was the president of the Naugatuck Railroad.

The Naugatuck Railroad has a long history in Connecticut, with the original railroad chartered in 1845 and opening in 1849. The railroad ran from Bridgeport to Winsted, following the Naugatuck River. It changed ownership several times due to economic changes, and in 1887 the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad leased the line. By 1906, the railroad was fully owned by the New Haven and Hartford Railroad.
