c1950's-60's. These colorful pre-decimal era tokens were used widely on buses and trams. As a benefit for those in areas that had the privilege, they were given to students to get to school, police officers for trips to court - and the morgue. Conductors (and sometimes local merchants) would try to give them back as change as an unofficial currency.
