Welcome to my listing for:
Goodyear Man'f'g Co. 1906 Letterhead NY, NY Naugatuck, Conn India Rubber Glove
The Goodyear company that we all know today was incorporated in 1898, well over 50 years after Charles Goodyear received his patent in 1844 for the Vulcanization process. Decades before the 1898 incorporation, a company called "Goodyear's India Rubber Glove Manufacturing Company" was incorporated in Connecticut in 1847 and in 1849 made products (in Naugatuck, CT) under Charles Goodyear's patent until the agreement expired in 1865. They continued production for decades after. As you would imagine in the early days of today's Goodyear company, there was a lawsuit. In 1899 the case decision went in favor of the "Goodyear India Rubber" and the company continued to associate itself with the Goodyear name. I could not determine for how long - which brings us to this letterhead. It was until at least 1906, and likely longer. However, in my research, I could find only one other example of this letterhead that was sold in the past 10 years. Generally, any item with the Goodyear name on it relating to rubber anytime before 1899 is scarce.
Condition: On watermarked laid paper. Showing minor signs of age, use and handling consistent with it's age. Expected fold creases from posting. No tears or loss. Eye-catching header graphics and mixed header typography. In good to very good condition. Will display well in your collection. An excellent framing candidate. You will receive the exact example as seen in the photos. It measures approx. 8 7/8" x 9 1/4"
