James F. Burns (1853-1917) was one of the pioneers of the Cripple Creek gold camp. Raised in a working-class family, he was an advocate for mining workers right to join a union, was credited with building the Short Line railroad that traveled through the mountains between Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek and was also a large stockholder of several Cripple Creek mining companies. When Mr. Burns died in 1917, he left behind an estimated fortune of 40 million dollars.
His signature can be found on the reverse of this certificate.
