1875 "Bank of California" San Francisco Letterhead L.H. Hershfield Helena, MT

Hershfield came to Montana in 1864 with a train of 26 wagons laden with goods and sold the whole outfit to Monroe Salisbury. Hershfield reached Virginia City July 3rd, 1964 and bought up a large quantity of gold dust, which he made a large profit. In 1865 he established a bank (Merchants' National) in Helena and a branch in Virginia City. In 1880, he established a bank in Benton, in 1883 a bank in White Sulphur Springs.
